Two seventh place finishes mark the worst start to any indoor trials campaign for Japan’s Takahisa Fujinami - Repsol Montesa, who will be looking to get his season back on track as the 2010 SPEA FIM Indoor Trial World Championship heads to Barcelona this coming Sunday.

A mature and experienced rider, and one you would normally associate with precision and consistency, Fujinami has been out of sorts so far this season. He blamed the new indoor trials format for his disappointing display in Sheffield, but held his hands up and admitted: “it was my fault,” after an equally dire outing in Marseille.

“I did not pass the qualifying lap for the second time,” said a dejected Fujinami after failing to make the grade and pass through to the semi final in Marseille. “I’m still convinced that the new regulations had a negative influence on my result at the Sheffield indoor, but at round two in France I admit that it was my fault.”

Fujinami’s poor results, personified by his uncharacteristic mistake in the last chance process that eliminated him prior to the semi-final in Marseille, have left many questioning whether he is carrying an injury. Others believe he is simply failing to gel with his 2010 bike. A highly-developed four-stroke that his Repsol Montesa team-mate, joint series points leader Toni Bou, is having no such problems with.

“I do not have any injury and it is not the bike that is a problem, the bike is even better than last year’s,” said the thirty-year-old. “I have had big problems with the new format, though. In qualification I have been getting good results, but then when challenging for the final I do not like the system."

Fujinami continued. "In Marseille I was going well and I had the fifth best qualifying lap, but then I made one small mistake in the last chance sections and there was no time to recover in the final sections. It is difficult and I think this is one of the key reasons I have not done so well this year.”
Round three of the 2010 SPEA FIM Indoor Trial World Championship in Barcelona this weekend is an important home race for Fujinami’s Montesa team. However, it is one that the underperforming Japanese rider, who finished fourth overall in last year’s indoor championship, has faired well at in the past.

“It is definitely very important for me to do better in Barcelona,” said a clearly motivated Fujinami. “Barcelona is where I live at the moment and where I have my family here and many friends, plus it is the team’s home round. So yes, I want to improve and make sure I perform well for them, as well as for me. I am looking to get a podium in Spain this weekend. Nothing less.”
